Earlier in the year, we stumbled upon our favourite kind of scandipop act – a pretty girl who sings poppy dance music! Unusually though, we found Daisy nestled amongst acts in America, rather than Sweden where she’s actually from, and still lives. And that’s because she took the bold step of sidestepping Europe and launching over there instead. The song is ‘Everytime’ and it’s still one of our favourite tracks of the year so far. We’ve listened to it countless times – the radio edit and the extended version – and we’ve yet to tire of it. It just seems to so many of the elements that we like to hear in a song. So it’s just as well that we’ve yet to tire of it, because it’s barely even started its life yet! She’s only just signed a record deal in the UK and will be coming over here to promote it as soon as a release date is decided upon.

Thankfully it’s not a fluke either, as there is another scandipop gem in her repertoire. ‘Goodbye Romeo’ is another catchy number, much in the same vein as ‘Everytime’. So it’s all been promising so far, even in these early stages.

Anyway, here’s the track ‘Everytime’, and below that is our interview with the lady herself;

scandipop: So Daisy, congratulations on your UK record deal!

Daisy: Thank you, I’m really excited.

scandipop: Who approached who? Did the label come to you guys or did you guys go to the label?

Daisy: The label actually approached Robbins, my US label. There were quite a few offers and they eventually went with Ministry of Sound.

scandipop: Ah, so was there a big fight over you?!

Daisy: I think there was a little fight (laughs). I mean, I’m not sure exactly what went on behind the scenes, but I’m happy with how it went.

scandipop: That’s good! Do you know which division of Ministry of Sound is going to release the record, because there are a few different labels within it.

Daisy: I’m not really sure of that either, but I think it’s Hard2Beat.

scandipop: Ok, so it’s the same guys who signed September, Star Pilots, Basic Element, and Gathania, so they’ve obviously got a soft spot for Swedish music!

Daisy: Yes they do!

scandipop: Have you got any idea of a release date?

Daisy: Erm, no not yet. We’re still talking about everything that needs to be done. And where and when and things like that. So no, nothing set yet but hopefully I’ll know all the details soon.

scandipop: And you’ll come over?

Daisy: Yes, definitely I will.

scandipop: Cool. A lot of Scandinavian artists will release their music in Scandinavia first, then Europe, then the UK, and will then leave the US until last. But you chose to release in the US before anywhere else, including your native Sweden. Why was that?

Daisy: You know, Sweden is a very big music country. We have exceptional pop music over here. We have producers who are brilliant at what they do. But I just felt that starting in Sweden just wasn’t the best thing for me. I feel like I have really big dreams and so I feel, why shouldn’t I follow them? I mean, I’m gonna be young once and so before my time is over I might as well try my luck over in the States where I’m actually dreaming of having a success. So I went over!

scandipop: Excellent! So have you spent a lot of time over there this year?

Daisy: I’ve been in the US two times this year. Two times has been a month I think.

scandipop: And how has the record been received?

Daisy: It’s been received really well. It’s had some airplay on the radio, it’s going really well. The response has been insane actually. So I’m just waiting for it to grow even more (laughs)!

scandipop: And when will Sweden see a release?

Daisy: That’s a very good question. I even have friends asking me the same thing! But I’m not sure of that at all, we don’t have anything planned that it’s gonna be released anytime soon, but things can change.

scandipop: Ok. So after ‘Everytime’, have you got an album ready to follow? Have you been working on tracks for an album?

Daisy: Yeah we’re working on a catalogue of some tracks at the moment. We’re just making as many tracks as possible and then will pick out whichever are best for the album afterwards. We’re just building a catalogue and working on tracks all the time.

scandipop: And what does it sound like? Is it all dance music like ‘Everytime’ and ‘Goodbye Romeo’?

Daisy: It is, but also I wanna try to do something different. I don’t wanna be one of those girls just doing dance music once again, you know, I wanna try something different. So I’m trying to put a bit of me into the music so that it’s more than just the mainstream dance.

scandipop: Ok. So what does having ‘Daisy’ in the music entail then?

Daisy: That’s a good question, because I don’t really know, myself! But when I’m in the studio, and when I feel something, I just go with whatever I feel. The inspiration I have for that moment is the best thing to follow. You can’t push someone to feel inspiration to make a track that’s not like the other tracks out there. So I’m just following my heart and what I feel for the moment. And let’s just say it’s that moment’s music.

scandipop: I see. And who have you been working with?

Daisy: Recently I’ve been working with a guy who’s worked a lot with Paulina Rubia. We did a little co-write when I was over there. And I’ve been working with Didrik and Sebastian Thott, two producers behind Ameerah’s track ‘The Sound of Missing You’. So I’ve done two songs with them already and I’m going back on Monday and meeting with another production team as well as Didrik and Sebastian. And I’ve been working with Mikael, the guy behind ‘Everytime’ and ‘Goodbye Romeo’ too!

scandipop: Good! So which other Swedish artists do you like?

Daisy: Robyn! She is absolutely amazing. She does whatever she feels like and she does it really well. I love her music, she’s really something else. And I actually look up to that, I’m trying to follow that. She’s really making her own music and I don’t think there’s anyone out there really sounding like she does. So I’ll try to follow that.

scandipop: Have you heard the song that she did with Royksopp, ‘The Girl & The Robot’?

Daisy: I did, I love it!

scandipop: It’s so good isn’t it?!

Daisy: I absolutely love it! The video was brilliant.

scandipop: It deserved to be a massive hit but it really hasn’t done very well at all in the UK for some reason.

Daisy: Maybe we should give it a little bit of time.

scandipop: Like Robyn, there have been a lot of Scandinavian artists having success in the UK recently. Does that make you feel positive about your chances?

Daisy: Of course. I’m Swedish as well but you know, we’re not a constellation of artists trying to break the UK. I must say I’m very lucky to actually be having the chance to do what I do, and so for a UK label to have heard what I’ve done and made them interested, it makes me even more hopeful to try and not come in as just another Swedish artist. I’m really happy that we have a lot of Swedish artists breaking in the UK, but you know, I don’t wanna be ‘just another one’.

scandipop: Ok. Going back to Sweden now, would you ever enter Melodifestivalen?

Daisy: No, I don’t really think so.

scandipop: Why not?

Daisy: I don’t know! I think it’s really entertaining and I love it, I love to watch it because it’s brilliant show. But I don’t really feel like I belong there.

scandipop: How come?

Daisy: I don’t know. I don’t know if I would feel comfortable in that position. But who knows, maybe I’d change my mind in the future. Maybe someone would present a song to me that’s absolutely great and that I’d love to perform there. But now, I don’t really feel that it’s something for me. (laughs).

scandipop: Ok. Well you’ve got lots of exciting things going on at the moment; your record is out in the US, you’ve got a record deal in the UK…..so what are you going to be up to for the next couple of months?

Daisy: I’m just gonna work as hard as possible in getting everything out there and working to put together an album and another single, and just keep the music coming. I’m planning to stay around a long while, let’s see if it’s gonna happen. Hopefully if I work hard enough it will!

scandipop: I hope so.

Daisy: Thank you!

scandipop: Thank you Daisy!
