We were DJ-ing at a party last weekend in Stockholm, and had the delightful experience of being introduced to a fantastic Swedish song that we’d never heard of before. A request was made, a “never heard of it” response was given, an “it’s amazing” argument was put forward, an iPhone was brandished, the song was played, we fell in love instantly, and the rest is history.
That song was ‘Secret Place’ by Syster Sol. Now, if we say the words “Swedish” and “reggae”, some of you will run a mile. Others amongst you will think “Ace of Base”. Well you’re both wrong. Although we definitely have more of an affinity with the latter. But ‘Secret Place’ is very much a commercial pop take on reggae. Think Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ minus the drama. It’s a bright, breezy, and melodic number that defies the listener not to partake in a bit of head nodding while it’s playing. And we’ve been playing it a lot since the weekend.
We’ve heard/read the Syster Sol name mentioned a few times actually over the past year or so. And upon listening to her latest album ‘Kichinga!’ (which ‘Secret Place’ is taken from) it turns out there were a few songs that we recognised as having been played on P3 radio. But still, ‘Secret Place’ is totally new to us and we wholeheartedly thank that taste making reveler for bringing the track into our life, if she’s a regular reader here. Although given that she’s a Syster Sol fan, she’s probably not a regular reader here at all.
Anyway. We shall be using this song to suitably soundtrack the last few weeks (days? hours?) of summertime. Now pass us a rum based cocktail with ostentatious decoration.
And yes Brits, she’s released it in the UK too.
