Who wants to hear some new Velvet?!
The Queen of scandipop has been drafted in to provide vocals on a cover of THE biggest dance track of the last 12 months, Edward Maya’s ‘Stereo Love’. And she sounds wonderful on it. We know we’ll be absolutely shot dead for this, but she actually does sound a lot better than the original singer. She sings it, for a start! And it’s so good to hear her vocals again. The track is credited as PJ feat Velvet.
She’s been very quiet about this, probably because it’s not really an official release that they’re going for. Whenever these cover versions of big dance tracks crop up, it’s usually only for the purpose of being licensed to compilation albums, as the original versions can often be too expensive to license. For example, a record label will release a compilation album, but will have already spent quite a lot of money licensing songs to be included on there. They want to have ‘Stereo Love’ on there, but because it’s such a huge hit, Edward Maya’s record label will be asking for a high licensing fee. The label releasing the compilation album will then decide to use a different version, and that’s where acts like PJ come into the equation – PJ’s record label will quote a much lower price, and thus get their song included on the comp album.
Hmmm, in one way it’s a bit saddening to see Velvet’s name cheapened by going down to the copycat cover version level. And that’s probably why she hasn’t mentioned it anywhere, or let her fans know. In fact, we only found out about it through our own scandipop forums (thanks Tom!). But on the other hand, as we’ve said before, it’s great to hear her voice on a huge dance tune again.
And here it is!
