This weekend, Poland was treated to an invasion of the best kind of Scandinavian pop music. Four very pretty ladies all took to the stage at the Sopot Hit Festival, each performing their massive dance hit while being flanked and adored by frantic backing dancers. Dance music is massive in Poland and many Scandinavian acts are launched there before anywhere else, even their native Scandinavia. It’s a good way to test the waters and if you manage to have one hit, radio is usually very supportive of the singles that follow.
One lady who’s been launched in Poland before anywhere else in the world is Daniela. Her debut single ‘Push It Up’ was a hit there, and a follow up, ‘You & I’ has already been well received at radio. Both have been given the video treatment. This is the first performance we’ve seen of Daniela but we were mightily impressed. The intro commands the audience easily, and she gets a great reaction throughout the performance, lip synching audience members included!
Next up, Agnes, who appears to be blowing up just about everywhere around the world at the moment. She’s just signed a US deal with Interscope, her single is climbing the charts in Australia, and it’s pretty much the song of the summer in Europe. So it’s understandable that she gets a heroes welcome once the extended string into of ‘Release Me’ starts.
Gathania‘s been spending a lot of time in Poland recently too. No doubt she was getting tips from Agnes backstage about how to handle the UK – Gathania’s ‘Blame It On You’ will be released here later in the year. But she already looks like she’s got the popstar thing down to perfection. By now, her delivery of ‘Blame It On You’ leaves no room for improvement, and she looks and sounds completely at ease with the whole thing.
And finally, the Queen bee herself enters the stage to perform three of her hits. September whips the crowd up with a tantalising intro for ‘Satellites’, sings the whole song, then onto ‘Until I Die’, and then she finishes with ‘Breathe’, the song she’s released in Europe along with DJ and producer Schiller. All while looking gorgeous as ever in one of her increasingly smaller, but classy, outfits!
