Here’s the debut single (sort of) from a new (sort of) popstar from Lund in the south of Sweden. ‘Good As Hell’ by Paul Rey.
Paul had an earlier career as a rapper P.J. – but this is his first release under his new moniker Paul Rey (still not his actual real name btw – that’s Paul Jokela, fact fans). His ‘Makin Moves’ album got him a nomination as Best Newcomer at last year’s Kingsize Magazine awards. But still, he retired to the US for three months to work on a new sound. And ‘Good As Hell’ is the first fruits of that labour. We’re kinda glad he did too, because he’s now sounding more pop. ‘Good As Hell’ sounds a little bit like the production we heard on Envy/Nico & Vinz’s ‘Am I Wrong’ last year (which is now taking over the US this year, incidentally). It’s got a strong melody (we like the surprise uplift during the chorus – you’ll know it when you get to it), and a positive lyrical message that sort of rubs off on you too. And that all combines to a pretty good pop song that – as if by magic – sounds perfect for summer radio.
We’ll be listening out for more from this chap.
