Benny Andersson’s Orkester have got themselves a new single coming out later this month. Which basically means that we get some new music from Benny Andersson. Always a welcome treat.
‘Nyårsballongen’ is the new single, and you can already take a listen to it in full below.
It’s the result of a (quite amazing actually) TV concept. SVT’s Babel tasked ten songwriters with scribing lyrics to a specially composed piece of music by Benny Andersson. The winning lyricist was chosen by Benny himself, along with Helen Sjöholm (regular BAO vocalist, and the singer of this new track too), Marie Nyreröd (Babel’s producer), and Jessika Gedin (Babel’s presenter). And in the end they went with Horace Engdahl’s lyrics, ‘Nyårsballongen’.
Initially there were no plans to release ‘Nyårsballongen’, with Benny stating that it would instead be included on the next BAO album. However, reception to the song has been so good, that it’ll be released in the next few weeks as a single. And we can hear why.
It’s a gorgeous little folk ballad with a rousing tempo to it. And that intro is VERY Benny Andersson.
The studio version is imminent, but in the meantime, here it is being performed live for the first time;
