We only ever allowed ourselves to dream of making the following statement, never once building up our hopes. But….
Aqua are returning next month with a brand new single!
Earlier this month we wrote about the announcement that they would be releasing a Greatest Hits in Denmark and Sweden this June. Well, it’s now been confirmed that the album will have 16 remastered tracks and 3 brand new songs – including the lead single, ‘Back To The 80’s’. Technically, it’s not a new song, it was recorded for their aborted third album earlier this decade. They’ve also been performing it at their (very few) Scandinavian gigs over the last couple of years. Nevertheless, it’s a BRAND NEW SINGLE FROM AQUA! So we’re very happy indeed. You can listen to it below;
It’s good isn’t it? We can confirm that it gets even better after multiple listens. You really can’t beat a piano ballad intro that turns into a synth pop stomper. It’s definitely far more in the mould of their second album, ‘Aquarius’, than their more commercial debut album, ‘Aquarium’. It’s certainly not one of their catchiest, we’d put it on a par with ‘Around The World’ – but then Aqua probably have the most staggeringly high benchmark of any pop group ever, when you’re comparing their singles for catchiness (Barbie Girl, Doctor Jones, My Oh My, in fact most of their albums tracks too!).
There’s no word yet on a UK release for either the single or the album, but Universal are commited to the project enough to be making a video for ‘Back To The 80s’. You can watch the making of the video below;
