What’s this? The debut album from Swedish producer and songwriting duo Vargas & Lagola. This is ‘The Butterfly Effect’.
What’s on it? 11 tracks in total, although that includes an intro, an outro, and two interludes. What’s left is three of their singles (‘Somebody That Understands Me’, ‘Since 99’ and the massive ‘Forgot To Be Your Lover’), and four brand-new songs.
What are the new songs like? For the most part, they are more lush examples of the duo’s own excellent brand of Americana, a welcome extension to what’s already been a hugely enjoyable catalogue of releases. ‘Pick Me Up’, however, is our personal fave – it finds them veering into ’80s ABBA territory!
What do Vargas & Lagola say? “This first album is our attempt to give the outside world a more nuanced palette of our musical landscape, and it really means the world to us to finally share it. We try not to set any boundaries for our work. Most songs that we like are based on a similar mindset and construction, and in the end, the most important thing isn’t if they come out as hip hop, pop or rock.”
