In yesterday’s 2014 Scandipop Award nominations, you might have noticed this one in the line-up – nominated for Best EP. We wrote about Swedish singer Ace Wilder a couple of times last year, namely her singles ‘Do It’ and ‘Bitches Like Fridays’. And then at the end of December she went and released her debut EP, ‘A Wilder EP’, featuring those two singles plus two new tracks. Two new tracks which are both pretty damn amazing, and which we must therefore bring to your attention. ‘Deadly’ and ‘Heart For Rent’.
Both are fully and uncompromisingly poptastic. ‘Deadly’ actually sounds like a dirtier sister of Kylie Minogue’s ‘Timebomb’. It’s the chorus! WHAT a chorus. And bonus points for the “I hope he’s got the balls to come” lyric. Oh girl, we hear ya. ‘Heart For Rent’ is Ace of Base meets Katy Perry. And it also comes with its thought provoking lyrics – “it’s a heart for rent, in the shittiest place in town”. That’s kind of sad, isn’t it?
It might only be a four track EP, but it’s an absolute triumph of pop music. And perhaps it’s best that they kept it so short because as a result, there is nothing on here that could be described as filler material. Instead we get four songs that could well be hit singles for artists a hundred times as famous as Ace. And actually, this little package means that Ace herself deserves be a hundred times more famous than she is.
Somewhat notably, ‘Deadly’ clocks in at just under three minutes – which makes us wonder if it was another Melodifestivalen submission. Ace Wilder will be competing in Heat 3 of next month’s Melodifestivalen with the song ‘Busy Doin Nothin’, which she co-wrote with the writers of last year’s Melodifestivalen winner, Joy Deb and Linnea Deb.
Listen to both new songs in full here;
(and while you’re at it, check out the new version of ‘Do It’ which appears on the EP, and is actually even better than the original. It’s been spruced up and dancepoppified)
