Last night Sweden voted Loreen and ‘Euphoria’ as the winner of Melodifestivalen 2012.
And we think that most people would agree that it was a fantastic result – no matter who you were supporting. It was hardly a massive surprise, but Sweden did at least give us an exciting results show. Nobody had any idea who the winner was going to be between ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Amazing’ until the last two set of votes were announced.
So let’s talk about ‘Euphoria’. Well, we’ve never heard anything quite like the reaction she got in Globen arena last night. Not just from winning, or from performing the song, but from the moment she was actually brought from backstage into the arena to get ready for her catwalk entrance. An eruption of love and appreciation that got bigger as host Sarah Dawn Finer started to announce her. It was a big WOW moment, which in turn introduced another wow moment – the most important one of the night – Loreen’s winning performance.
Truly a worthy winner. Sweden loves it, and it seems like this morning all international pop fans with their eye on Melodifestivalen, love Sweden for choosing it as their winner. Oh yes, that brings us to that other matter of fact that a Melodifestivalen win entails – ‘Euphoria’ going on to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest. We haven’t heard most of the other songs that will be going to Eurovision in May, so it’s not quite fair to state that ‘Euphoria’ should rightly win the whole thing. But let’s face it – it’s going to take something genuinely incredible to better it. So we’re hoping that Sweden gets a good, if not the absolute best result at Eurovision in May.
In the wake of last night, let’s not forget about the evening’s other valiant contender though – Danny Saucedo.
In any other year, last night could well have been his night. Sweden loved ‘Euphoria’, but they clearly really did love ‘Amazing’ too. In fact, ‘Amazing’ got more televotes last night than most of the winners of the last ten years. In the all time rankings, only Loreen’s ‘Euphoria’ and The Ark’s ‘The Worrying Kind’ received more. And that might be some comfort to him today. Hopefully. The other comfort should be taken from the fact that he gave a brilliant performance last night. The best he could have done. All he could have done.
As for the rest of the show – well it was just as fantastic as we’ve come to expect from Melodifestivalen 2012. The opening number ‘Baku, Baku’ that sent up ‘New York, New York’, Eric Saade’s dance performance that incorporated a medley of his hits, the interval act that saw Helena Paparizou take on Eric’s ‘Popular’, and lastly Sarah Dawn Finer’s brilliant EBU sketch – we love that woman!
It’s slightly painful that it’s all over. But we’ve got an incredible winner out of it. Melodifestivalen 2012 is going to be difficult to beat in terms of entertainment. So a massive congratulations and thank you goes out to all of those involved, from scandipop.co.uk. A-a-a-Amazing!
