What’s this? KEiiNO are back with a brand-new single. Always a treat in itself, but with this one, they’re doing the whole Eurovision thing again, competing in Norway’s national final Melodi Grand Prix (more on that right here). This is ‘Monument’.
What’s it like? If ‘Spirit In The Sky’ was the band summoning the northern lights to shine a magical glow over their birth and introduction, ‘Monument’ is the sound of them taking on the form of the almighty Norwegian fjords and bestowing an invite to all of Europe to descend upon its vast landscape and admire its majesty. Preferably in May 2022, when the Eurovision Song Contest comes to Norway.
So we’re taking in those terms already? With ‘Monument’, they’ve definitely ushered in a new era of their style – levelling up the electronica, while leaving the folk elements of their sound to play a smaller, yet still significant role. They’re also shining more of a spotlight onto the joik factor, while simultaneously mystifying it even further. This is KEiiNO 2.0 – and the potential, as with everything else surrounding the song, is larger than ever!
What do KEiiNO say? “We really believe ‘Monument’ has that little something extra that will appeal to both the public and the juries. It is time to bring the Eurovision Song Contest back to beautiful Norway, and we really hope the Norwegian people will vote us through and give us that chance.
Written by? The band themselves, along with Alexander Olsson and Rudiger Schramm. And to create the massive sound they wanted, they’ve combined a live band, samples and synths, alongside strings from Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.
