Here’s a beautiballad that we were sent this week. ‘Chain You’, the debut single from Swedish singer Joni.
It’s melodic and dramatic. The drama being the “I wanna chain you, chain you….I wanna keep you, keep you…keep you in my trap of love” lyric of the chorus. The whole thing is swept up in tinkling piano and lush strings, with Joni revealing herself to be a gorgeous vocalist – which isn’t a bad impression to make on your first musical outing obviously.
Attending music school in Sweden and then travelling around London, Hungary (her parents are Hungarian), Cyprus, Spain, and Turkey, has resulted in a mixed combination of influences for her music, she tells us. “I don’t like to put my music in a genre, but if I had to I guess it would be organic pop”. And despite the fact that she grew up in Stockholm, Scandipop didn’t quite shape her music tastes – “While my friends were listening to Swedish pop music, I was often listening to American artists like Eva Cassidy, Carol King, Don Mclean and the Bee Gees. I was never ashamed of having a different taste in music”. But yet ‘Chain You’ is an almighty ballad that is right up our Scandipop streets. Something which would sound right at home on a Eurovision or Melodifestivalen stage. It’s very instant, and hugely commercial. And you can’t really ask for a getter breed of ballad than that.
