The new single and video from Swedish singer Maia Hirasawa has been released online (the song a few weeks back, the video today) – ‘Lights Are Out’.

Maia Hirasawa has never really been on our radar, despite her being quite big in Sweden. And predictably, we know her most from when she performed a unique cover of The Ark’s ‘The Worrying Kind’ at the 2008 Melodifestivalen final. Ooooh the shame (of us, not dear Maia).

But erm….has she always been this good?

New single ‘Lights Out’ is an electropop number with a catchy chorus that puts us in mind of American teen pop princess Cady Groves and the chorus of her hit ‘Love Actually‘. That’s probably not what Maia had in mind when recording it, but it’s what we’re hearing. A lot, actually. Let’s hope Cady’s lawyers don’t agree.

Regardless of soundalike status though, what it all boils down to as it sounds damn good. Scandinavia exports this stuff by the Volvo truck load, but this track is one of the better ones.

‘Lights Are Out’ is the first single from Maia’s new album ‘What I Saw’, which is released on Monday.

Here’s the video, in which she gets all iamwhoamiwhogivesatoss on us – but thankfully serves up a right tune with it (unlike her contemporary we’ve just mentioned).
