Last night in London, saw the highly entertaining annual bash, Second Cherry Song Contest take place. The premise is that the songs which competed in their national finals for Eurovision selection, but just missed out, get another chance – a second bite of the cherry. Only 21 countries are selected though, based on the calibre of their songs, but Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Finland were all represented last night. Norway was unjustifiably left out, despite its offer of Lene Alexandra‘s ‘Sillycone Valley’!
Iceland was represented by Mercedes Club, Sweden was represented by Sanna Nielsen, Denmark had Kendra Lou to offer, and Finland had Mikael Kontinnen to show for themselves. After a wonderful presentation of all 21 performances from the national finals (that Mercedes Club performance never gets boring), the juries got together and voted, and then submitted their votes one by one. At the end though, Iceland, Denmark, and Finland were nowhere to be seen at the top of the leader board, but Sweden finished in a very respectable second place behind Spain – meaning that Sanna had to settle for the silver yet again. Maybe next year Sanna. The Second Cherry Song Contest will be back again in 2009, and we’ll give you plenty of noticenext time rather than reporting on it the morning after.
