What’s this? As the title suggests – and which is clear to anyone, whether they speak Icelandic or not – it is the arrival of a song tailored to get you moving with the arrival of summer. ‘Sumardans’ by Poppvélin.
Who are Poppvélin? An Icelandic collective of musicians – Örlygur Smári, Sólveig Ásgeirsdóttir and Valgeir Magnússon. Örlygur and Valgeir have been behind plenty of Icelandic pop classics, and a fair few of their Eurovision entries too. And some of you may remember Sólveig from Söngvakeppnin 2017.
What’s it like? It’s an infectiously upbeat tune that sprinkles a certain amount a soul, a pinch of disco, and a definite retro sheen over what is a refreshingly simple pop track.
