Song of the week this week is ‘Vinegar’ by Finnish lady singer Anna Abreu. It’s the first single from her second album, ‘Now’ and is a change in direction for the better for her. Her self titled debut album had its quality moments and was an enjoyable pop/r&b album, but ‘Vinegar’ sees Anna go down the route we like to see all female singers go down eventually – dance/pop! Welcome Anna, we were expecting you.
Anna was runner up in a series of Finnish Idol. Her first album performed as well as could be expected for a runner up, but none of its singles ever made the top five. ‘Vinegar’ however, has given her her first number one in Finland. The odd title comes from the line in the chorus where Anna claims her lover is like vinegar in her dreams. We think that means that she doesn’t like him. She also calls him the smoke in her lungs, the dirt in her eye, and mentions something about a lemon drop. So it ticks the ‘great lyrics’ box straight away. The song sounds like one of the better songs that Velvet or Pandora would release. And it comes complete with a backing track that pays homage to Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, and a soaring vocal that is going to sound amazing on the scandipop dancefloor next month!
The rest of the album is worth getting excited about too, but we’ll do a full review later in the week. And maybe a review of her first album too.
