As a lot of you will probably be aware by now, a very wonderful thing has happened to Scandinavian pop music in the UK this week. ‘Release Me’ by Agnes came out on the Sunday just gone, as a download only release. It spent its first few days shooting up the iTunes chart and it was top ten by the end of Monday. On Tuesday, the first official UK singles chart midweeks were published, and Agnes was sitting at number 6! This was an unprecedented feat in itself, but throughout Tuesday she kept climbing up iTunes, selling more. On Wednesday’s midweeks she was at number 3, and at number 2 on the iTunes chart. Then, yesterday morning, she finally climbed to number 1 on iTunes – which is an amazing triumph for scandipop, or any kind of pop for that matter!

As of yesterday, she was still at number 3 on the midweeks. It’s unlikely that she’ll climb any higher, because she’s almost 10,000 units behind the song at number 2. However, it’s unlikely that she’ll drop, as she’s around 3,000 copies higher than the number 4 song.

On top of all this, Radio 1 has now A-Listed the song, which means that it should grow even bigger in the coming weeks. Plus, her label 3Beat Blue have announced that they will be releasing a physical format of the single on June 8th, in light of the success of the download.

It’s all very exciting isn’t it?! Our very own Agnes crossing over to huge mainstream UK success! It’s heartening to know that the UK, and its radio, haven’t completely turned their backs on pure pop music – and are more than happy to welcome a Swedish girl with an old lady’s name into their hearts with her tremendous pop tunage!

It’s also emerged that ‘Release Me’ has been signed to an Australian record label, so it looks like Agnes will be enlightening the Aussies very soon too! For now though, have a listen to the half English, half French version that has been recorded for Agnes’ invasion of France!
