Tonight’s the night that it all kicks off in Finland. ‘All’ being the process of selecting the Finnish entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest! For those of you who missed our review of the 12 songs competing, you can read it here; https://www.scandipop.co.uk/?p=252

Tonight is Heat One, and that means that it’ll be Kwan, Riikka, Tapani Kansa, and Tiara battling it out. The top two will go straight to the final, and the bottom two will be put through to the second chance round. Our preferences for direct qualification would be Kwan and Riikka. Kwan do seem to be the favourites to win the whole thing, but you never know. We’d certainly love to see them and their late nineties style of pop music in the final. Rikka’s song is undeniably beautiful and probably our favourite ballad out of the 12. Emotive, hypnotic, and it even comes with a key change!

Tapani Kansa sings another ballad but it’s just not as striking, catchy, or pretty as Riikka’s ‘Meren’. And Tiara provides the practically obligatory Finnish rock tinged track. It’s not bad, but again, it’s just nowhere near as good as the first two songs.

Here’s the line up in full. We’ll be writing our show report and telling you the result tomorrow.

  1. Kwan – “10.000 light years”
  2. Tiara – “Manala”
  3. Tapani Kansa – “Rakkautta on, rauhaa ei”
  4. Tiara – “Manala”
