Today the BBC announced who had come 5th in their Sound of 2012 countdown. And we were delighted to hear that it was Swedish electro duo Niki & The Dove – made up of Gustaf Karlöf and Malin Dahlström. They join 5th placers in previous BBC Sound Of lists – La Roux, Kaiser Chiefs, Dizzee Rascal, Joss Stone and Enter Shikari. One year Lady Gaga came 6th, so make of that what you will.
Although they’re not actually a new act per se. In fact, they were formed and released their first single in 2010. And last year they released their first EP – a seven track event called ‘The Drummer’. But it’s in 2012 that they’re aiming to release their first album.
This is all very well and good, but what do they actually sound like – what is this “Sound” that the BBC speak of?!
Well in a nutshell we’d jot them down as a cross between Oh Land and Florence & The Machine. Both sonically and visually. However, they’ve got that inimitable style of Scandinavian electronica that only the Scandinavians seem capable of making. That may seem like a cop out of a description, but this website has been online for over three years, you should know what we mean by now! Although actually, if you’re looking for something a lot more detailed, read this piece in The Guardian from when Michael Cregg met the duo in London late last year. It sums up everything about them perfectly.
You can listen to their back catalogue on Spotify (and we imagine it’s not territory restricted, since their iTunes releases haven’t been). Quick picks for the time conscious amongst you though – oooh we’d say ‘The Drummer‘, ‘Last Night‘, and ‘DJ Ease My Mind‘.
And you can claim a free download of last year’s ‘The Fox’ single over at their Facebook page.
Grand!
