There was a time in Sweden when summer season just wasn’t right without a new Markoolio song. Particularly if there was a large football tournament happening somewhere in the world.
This summer he’s back with a brand new single (after January’s ‘Borta Bra Men Hemma Bäst‘) and he’s chosen to pay tribute to that beloved Swedish tradition of vacationing in Thailand. For those who weren’t aware, the Swedes holidaying in Thailand is their stereotypical equivalent of the Brits taking an Easyjet flight to a Spanish island. It’s the done thing.
‘En Vecka i Phucket’ is Markoolio’s musical spoof of this trend. In terms of packing in the lyrical clichés, it does for Thailand what Babsan’s ‘Ge Mig En Spanjor’ or After Dark’s ‘En Natt I Madrid’ did for Spain. Which makes you wonder – is Markoolio really just the straight male version of a drag queen?!
Whatever he is, he’s the man behind ‘Värsta Schlagern’, and so we’ll forever be indebted to him. And if that means enduring one play of ‘En Vecka i Phuket’, then so be it. Oh go on then – three plays it is…
