This week’s episode of Så Mycket Bättre saw the crew take turns in covering the songs of Sylwia Vrethammar. And Darin chose to take on her ‘Magdalena (Livet Före Döden)’.
His version of ‘Magdalena’ actually has a lot in common with his version of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ which was a genuine hit for him a couple of years back. Melodic synth rock in mid-tempo, and with a fair amount of anthemic instrumentation thrown in. It’s different to anything else he’s given us this season on Så Mycket Bättre, but another track that we’ll be playing a lot of in the coming weeks.
For once, our Sunday morning post about Darin’s Så Mycket Bättre activity doesn’t come with the news that his latest offering is now number 1, 2, or 3 on Swedish iTunes. ‘Magdalena’ is actually languishing outside the top 20, as are the rest of the songs from last night’s show. That’s a first. However, since Swedish music buyers haven’t been so quick to purchase any of Sylwia Vrethammar’s cover versions in previous weeks, perhaps they’re applying the same logic in turn to covers of her songs too. Poor Sylwia! Why is she so unpopular?….
Regardless, Darin’s ‘Magdalena’ is lovely. Here’s the 90 second preview that appears on iTunes, and below that – the full song on Swedish Spotify;
