Here’s a new pop chap from Finland, bringing with him to the table a marvellous, if a little strange song called ‘Sinking Feeling’. It’s Aslak – “a 24 year old singer-songwriter boy from Helsinki making indie pop that you can dance and feel melancholy to“.
At first, it IS a little strange, as we’ve just said. Largely because of his alternative vocal delivering an even more alternative pronunciation of the lyrics (which he wrote himself). But once you get past that, as a listener you are rewarded with what’s really a fantastic song. It took us two listens to really get into it, and it’s turning out to be even better upon every listen. The production is an unwittingly camp pastiche of the new romantic era of the 80s. And the middle eight is genuinely sublime. Simple. Short. But absolutely sublime.
It’s not a single, and in fact he hasn’t even gotten around to releasing anything at all yet. In his own words it’s a taster for a forthcoming demo. So we guess it’s sort of rough. But by Christ it’s good, regardless.
‘Sinking Feeling’ was written and by Aslak, and produced by Kalle Määttä.
