Back in June we heralded the return of Alcazar’s former firecracker, Annikafiore, with the release of her debut solo EP, ’Preaching To The Choir’. Back then she had allowed us to upload a clip of one of the four tracks from the EP. Whichever one we wanted, she had said. Our favourite. So we went with ‘Don’t Wanna C U 2nite’. And it’s a song that we’ve spent a great deal of this summer listening to and getting merrily lost within its layers.

Whether intentional or not, it’s all a bit barmy. But theatrically so, suitably for Annikafiore. It takes that whole tears-on-the-dancefloor thing a step further. Or lower, as the case may be. For ‘Don’t Wanna C U 2nite’ isn’t just sadness to a dancebeat, it sounds like a full-on nervous breakdown on the dancefloor. Rocking back and forth, staring into space. And weeping, but not knowing whether to sing or just plain wail – so attempting a mixture of both. And of course, with heavy make-up streaming down its face. It’s ‘Uninvited’ by the Freemasons after it has used up all of its energy on the dancefloor, but rather than going home, it’s just collapsed on the spot in a drunken stupor.

REMARKABLE! We’re verging on obsession with it.

Yesterday, ‘Don’t Wanna C U 2nite’ received two new leases of life, in the form of a video and a new remix by Soundfactory. The Soundfactory remix takes the song and to our ears reverses the aforementioned breakdown by an hour or so. So whereas the original ‘Don’t Wanna C U 2nite’ is the sound of the song in the midst of its exhausted anxiety attack, the Soundfactory remix gets the track while it’s teetering at the edge. Commandeering the dancefloor, and exuding all of the confidence of the Dancing Queen it is. But a closer look and some quick inspection, shows that this song is about to lose it. It’s shutting down, bit by bit. And the hot mess of a heap on the floor – is dangerously imminent.

As for the video, well that’s Annikafiore in recovery. Obviously. For the first time fit enough to be able to talk about what she’s just experienced. So straight away insisting on a nurse ushering her into a quiet room of the hospital with a hand held camera. And BOY does she re-live every intricate detail. Using only the expression in her face……
