What’s this? Icelandic vocal angel Jóhanna Guðrún has got herself a new Christmas album out. It’s called ‘Jól með Jóhönnu’ and it’s a beaut.
A beaut? An absolute beaut of festive Icelandic balladry.
What’s on it? It all kicks off with the gorgeous lead single – ‘Löngu Liðnir Dagar’. Though really, the album is packed with songs that could have been the single, and indeed yuletide classics for years to come.
What are the lighlights? Pay special attention to ‘Hjartað Lyftir Mér Hærra’ – an almighty, overwrought, hugely dramatic ballad that does not, under absolutely any circumstances, hold back! The final minute has to be heard to be believed. Our own personal fave is ‘Velkomin Jól’ – because of the unbridled joy contained within. Oh, and her incredible – INCREDIBLE – cover of Björgvin Halldórsson’s ‘Vetrarsól’. A six-minute epic that you’ll need a lie down from afterwards.
