This could well be the most amazing thing we’ve ever seen on Swedish television. And you will all know by now that this is no small praise!
You might remember last month we wrote a bit about the childrens television show that goes out every week in Sweden, Den Flygande Mattan. In that post, we’d included performances from Alcazar, Timoteij, Nanne, and Amy Diamond, and since then, Charlotte Perrelli has also popped in to sing for the young mites.
But they’ve totally surpassed themselves, and just about everything that has gone before, with what they gave us at the weekend. They drafted in AFTER DARK to perform for the children. The super successful drag act performed her Melodifestivalen 2004 entry, ‘La Dolce Vita’, and a cover of Abba’s ‘Mamma Mia’. But it’s the ‘La Dolce Vita’ performance that really stands out as the televisual event of our generation! In it we witness a 6ft drag queen perform her schlager classic whilst being flanked by four pre-teen boys as her dancers! Not only do these tiny tots deliver spot-on choreography, they also even assist her with her revealing costume change!!! It’s SO ridiculous, but SO amazing also. After Dark and the kids are then joined by four even younger girls for the triumphant final chorus, post-key change! Brilliant stuff.
You couldn’t make it up! And it’s really the sort of thing that you could only see in Sweden. The country of liberal minds, heartwarming acceptance, and an unrivalled appreciation of schlager and the glitter and glamour that accompany it!
