Something a little unusual went on in the world of Swedish pop lady Soso (formerly Sophia Somajo) on Thursday night. On her Facebook and Twitter pages, she put her emotions into attention grabbing capitals, and left the following message; “I’VE LOST MY MIND AND I’M GIVING MY NEW ALBUM “T.T.I.D.S.D.I.E.U.I.C.” (RELEASE DATE MAY 1ST) AWAY FOR FREE DOWNLOAD AS WE SPEAK ON THE PIRATE BAY!!!“. This was followed by a link to the notorious torrent site, The Pirate Bay.
Giving away your music is nothing new of course (although giving away a whole album, as opposed to a single track or an EP is less common), but doing so in affiliation with the Pirate Bay is quite the shocker. Although in hindsight, it’s actually been a wise move, as free giveaways go – in the last couple of days we’ve seen far more people talk about the album online than either of those singles that she released recently. So with regards to the whole point of giving your music away for free – to get people to listen to it and talk about it – we guess that’s job jolly well done!
Head on over to Soso’s website for an open letter explanation of why she’s doing it, and also where she’s uploaded a zip file of the album for you to download, should you not wish to tread the murky waters of a torrent site.
As for the album itself, ‘T.T.I.D.S.D.I.E.U.I.C.’ (‘That Time I Dug So Deep I Ended Up In China’), yeah it’s pretty good actually. It’s an album in tune with the two singles she released recently, ‘Who’s Gonna Love Me’ and ‘My Women, My Guitars’. For the purposes of comparison – it’s Lykke Li going a lot more electro (and vocally palatable), and Robyn going a lot less pop. There’s lots of interludes and stuff, serving to give a fully cohesive feel to the whole thing. Listen out for album highlight ‘The Ballad’, and also ‘He Don’t Live Here No More’, which sounds like Sophia Somajo going on Broadway, in an oh-so Soso style!
