Some boxfresh electropop now. And it comes courtesy of Momofoko – six boys from Malmö in the South of Sweden.
First impressions count – and our initial encounter with the Momofoko chaps was the above photo. And given that they look like they have the same stylist as 2011 era Steps, we were fully on board and hoping that the music matched up to such heady comparisons.
We jest of course. The similarity to Steps begins and ends with the Benneton advert chic. Instead, Momofoko bring to pop music an electronic indie flavour – although they still very much fit into the aforementioned pop music scene, as they are unquestionably pop.
Take their new single for example, ‘Still Need To Dance’. It’s very much like that all too rare occurance in music – when long haired gentlemen who play instruments, get together and form a band – but end up making music that sounds like Margaret Berger, Tove Styrke, or Vanbot. You know, like The Bravery’s ‘An Honest Mistake’, The Killers’ ‘Somebody Told Me’, or Carolina Liar’s ‘Last Night’. Music that appeals to us, but also to the people who normally DETEST the sort of music that we like.
It sounds just like THAT!
Here lies some salubriously psychedelic synths, a smattering of Xenomania-esque guitars, and a theatrically dramatic riff. And we like it very much;
