Molly Sandén is making a very welcome return to Melodifestivalen, after reaching the final in 2009 with ‘Så Vill Stjärnorna‘. She’s doing it with ‘Why Am I Crying’, a song that she wrote together with Aleena Gibson and Windy Wagner. We’re hoping it’s gonna be as immensely good as her current single, ‘Spread A Little Light’, and since both songs share the same songwriters, that is seeming likely!

At Monday’s Melodifestivalen press conference we had a quick chat with her about it and also about her plans after the contest.

scandipop: Molly you’re back again! And you’re looking rather fabulous right now, I must say.

Molly: Ha ha, thank you! And it’s nice to be back too.

scandipop: Can you tell us a little bit about the song, ‘Why Am I Crying’?

Molly: Yeah. Oooh, I haven’t actually figured out that response in English yet, I’ll just translate in my head! It’s a song about emptiness and when you’re missing someone. And you feel that you wanna be strong and you wanna be brave. But then you end up crying, and you don’t know why. Why am I crying. And that’s the title. So yeah – I think that many people can relate to that, somehow. And I wrote it from my own experience. So it’s very personal.

scandipop: Is it a ballad?

Molly: Yep, it’s a ballad.

scandipop: You co-wrote it with some of the same writers behind your current single ‘Spread A Little Light’. Would you say it’s similar in sound?

Molly: Ummm, yeah it’s the same kind of sound in that it’s a ballad, but the two songs aren’t very similar, no.

scandipop: Ok. You’ve been away for a while since your last album in the middle of 2009. Have you been making a lot of music since then, and if so, does that mean you’re gonna have an album for us after the contest?

Molly: Yes! I’ve been working on this album for almost two years now. So I’ve been focusing a lot on trying to find myself and to find my sound. Plus, I graduated too, this summer.

scandipop: Oooh, congratulations!

Molly: Thank you! So yes, I wanted to focus on my schoolwork for the last few years too. And then yes, I’ve been working on this album. I’ve been over to LA a few times, and New York, and Nashville. And I wrote a lot of songs there.

scandipop: Your last album was a mixture of ballads and an uptempo retro pop style. Can we expect the same thing from this new record?

Molly: Well it’s all in English this time, that’s the biggest difference. The last album was very Swedish. But this album is gonna be more pop. I don’t why it ended up that way, but it definitely felt like a natural step. And I wanna sing in English too. I think it’s got more appeal, and I can relate to English lyrics as well. Sound wise, there’s not as many ballads on this record as there were on the last album. But it’s not quite finished yet, we’ll see!

scandipop: But do you think it’ll be ready for a March/April release date?

Molly: I think so, yeah. Around there. But really I don’t quite know just yet!

scandipop: Cool. Well thanks for your time Molly, and see you in a few months!

Molly: Thank you! See you!
