Perish the thought that you’ll have missed out on any of these absolute gems. So half spurred on by that concern for you all, and have spurred on by the fact that it’s August and everyone in the Nordics is on holiday instead of releasing new music, we’ve taken a good long stock of what’s come so far in 2018. We’ve been revisiting, re-living, and re-loving some of the year’s best releases. And here, we present to you the definitive highlights of the synthpop genre.
The ten best synthpop tunes to have been released in 2018 so far.
You can find all of them – plus 36 other fine synthpop tracks released this year – on our Best New Synthpop playlist.

LEMAITRE FEAT. BETTY WHO – ROCKET GIRL
We defy anyone to listen to this and not be screaming “IT’S T-MINUS ONE” for the rest of their now much improved day.
JACK ANTONOFF & MØ – NEVER FALL IN LOVE
Tucked away on the Love, Simon soundtrack, this cute slice of electronica deserved to be a HUGE hit in its own right. Most definitely one of MØ’s better moments, which is no faint praise.
ARRHULT – 1999
The best release to date, from this Swedish sibling duo. Forget 1999 though, the best part in this song is when it goes all 2016 on us. That The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk-inspired middle eight!
SLEEPYHEADS – IF U GOT A PROBLEM
The debut single from a brand new collective of artists – two Swedish and one Icelandic. When it was released back in May, it sounded just like what we would’ve wanted Robyn to have come back with. Though more on her further down, yeah?…
BRIET – TWIN
We were worried that Icelandic newcomer BRÍET might have peaked too soon with the brilliant moodiness of her debut single ‘In Too Deep’ earlier in the year. But nope – she returned with the even better ‘Twin’. And we can’t wait for what’s to come next.
NEXT TO NEON – LOOKING AT YOU
The first single from the new artist moniker of Sweden’s Rasmus Viberg is one of those synthpop tunes that sounds like it was actually made in the 80s. It heralded the welcome arrival of an exciting new name in the genre.
ILY – YOU GIVE ME LIFE
With the likes of ‘Remedy’ and ‘Your Love’, Swedish artist ILY had already cemented herself as a one-to-watch. But ‘You Give Me Life’ turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy that ended up being her crowning glory so far. Without a doubt, Mimi has pulled off one of the most successful artistic reinventions that we’ve ever witnessed in Scandinavian pop music. She is not putting a foot wrong.
DIMA – BOOTS
The debut single from the new project of a Swedish producer duo, surpassed anything that they’d managed to produce previously for the likes of Avicii, Kelly Clarkson or Justin Bieber. Yep – we said that. We meant it too.
DAGNY – USED TO YOU
It’s unsurprising but no less of a relief that Norwegian superstar-in-the-making, Dagny, has glided into 2018 continuing to be as amazing as she has been since she burst onto the scene in 2016.
ROBYN – MISSING U
She’s back and she’s sounding precisely how we all want her to sound – so just like she did eight years ago then. Never change, Robyn.
